Step-by-Step

  • Scanner

Handheld scanner device offers flexibility and ease of use. An operator with the scanner can move with ease around the subject. The scanning unit can be transported in a standard carry case and controlled from a laptop computer.

  • Software

CAD/CAM software offers easy steps to modify or edit the captured scanned data; single clicks to finalise models. Toolpaths are quickly and easily generated for the machining process without ever having to see codes of programming language.

  • Milling Machine

The 3 axis CNC milling machines are integrated with industrial PC and monitor and come complete with high frequency spindle motor offering smooth, silent and fast machining capabilities. Standard single phase power supply is required. A range of machine sizes is available to suit your requirements.


Case Study - Wheelchair Seating

Traditional techniques for developing custom made seating for wheelchair users involve capturing shapes using plaster casts, foam or moulded inserts. While these are successful in helping correct skeletal deformities or a range of motion problems for users, they are also very labour intensive and costly techniques.

      

Staff in Belfast Digital Seating Services (DSS) developed a method of capturing precise information on the patient’s requirements by using a microscribe, where a pointer is used to digitise the surface of a deformable bead bag. Computer software is then used to machine the shape on a milling machine for the seat and backrest.

The teams in Swansea and Manchester have taken this a step further and are using a desktop laser scanner to scan the shape of the bead bag. When the shape has been captured the high quality scanned images are then used to prepare the milling process.

MediCARVE Digital Seating Systems is comprised of a 3D handheld portable scanning device, CADCAM software package for importing scanned data, incorporating the ability to edit or modify cushion shapes and generate toolpaths.

The 3 axis CNC machine comes with a choice of bed sizes and generous Z –axis gantry heights. Installation and training is all part of the package.
